TouchDesigner Wiki Secrets

Anyone who has learned TouchDesigner or tried learning TouchDesigner has encountered the TouchDesigner wiki. While it is full of invaluable information, it can be a bit difficult to navigate for users. This problem isn’t limited to just beginners, even advanced users can have trouble finding answers to their questions on the wiki without some help from fellow users and friends. So I decided to share a few of my most valuable wiki pages and explain why they’re helpful.

For beginners

Interoperability

This page on the wiki is great for giving you a high level view of all the things you can plug into or send data to from TouchDesigner. When you’re just getting started out and want to figure out “Can I work with _____ and TouchDesigner?” then this is the link you need to go to:

Glossary

You might be new to the community and chatting away on the Discord server and all of a sudden a bunch of words you’ve never heard of fly by and leave you in a daze. What are cooking, instancing, panes, and pattern matching?? Well this page on the wiki has you covered, and additionally links you to the relevant pages to learn more about the word:

Generative Design

There’s a great book called Generative Design that is written for Processing and it has tons of really great examples of everything from generative typography, image filters, drawing tools, and more. Markus from Derivative did the great service of converting all of the examples to TouchDesigner patches that you can dive in and learn a ton from or use as templates. This is a hidden gem! For intermediate/advanced

GLSL

GLSL is all the rage to learn these days because of the extra flexibility and power it gives you inside of TouchDesigner. When just getting started on your GLSL journey it can be a bit tough, and these pages on the Wiki are life savers and a constant reference to keep on hand:

Transparency

A lot of intermediate and advanced users have trouble managing transparency and opacity inside of 3D scenes. It seems a lot of the time like TouchDesigner just doesn’t work. But it’s working, you just didn’t know you had to do a bit of management work yourself. This page is dedicated to getting your working with transparency and varying opacity in 3D:
